Why Move to Devon?
Devon, “Gods own Country” or Devonshire as it is officially named, straddles a peninsula and so, uniquely among English counties, has two separate coastlines, the Bristol Channel, and the English Channel.
The county has had a reputation for being a haven for retirees. This was once the case, and to a degree still is. However, there has been a marked increase over the last decade of people escaping the rat race of city living in preference of a better work/life balance. As many as 5500 people left London for Devon in 2018.
This exodus has had an amazing effect on the county’s economy as a host of “work from home” entrepreneurs have created a boom in new start-up businesses across Devon. From the creation of local gin to scented candles and honey beauty products. With a little ingenuity, it’s incredible how diverse these small companies are.
Getting around is inevitably slower. Although Devon is the largest county in the UK, its travel connections are a little more limited when compared to city living.
You can still get to most large towns in the region as well as further afield to London, a journey of 2½ hours by train. Plus, there is a good local bus service. The M5 Motorway runs to Exeter, and the Devon Expressway and North Devon Link Road provide connections to the rest of the county. The main airport for the region is Exeter Airport.
Things may not be on your doorstep as they tend to be with larger locations, but there are so much more positives than negatives once you get used to the slower pace Devon offers.
There are still lots of exciting ways to entertain yourself, just in a different way. More outdoorsy activities are available both water based and countryside making Devon the perfect place to start a family.

Devon Schools & Education
Devon offers a huge choice of schools from nursery right through to university. The county has 427 primaries, 96 secondary schools 38 special schools, 8 FE colleges and four universities.

Older students also have access to some highly regarded colleges and universities. Most colleges also offer high education courses alongside their FE provision.
South Devon College is a large further education college providing a wide variety of courses over 9 different campuses within Torbay and the surrounding area. The college is part of The University of Plymouth Colleges network.
Exeter College, regarded as the best in the county, is an award-winning, world class college. They are Devon’s only Ofsted “outstanding” further education college.
The University of Exeter has campuses located in Exeter and Falmouth, and offers research and study in sciences, social sciences, business, humanities, and arts.
The largest university in Devon is the University of Plymouth it sits on the South Devon coastline at the very centre of the city. One of the largest universities in the region, it has a growing international reputation and teaches around 20,000 students annually.
Things to Do in Devon
Devon is an absolute playground when it comes to finding things to do recreationally.
The county is split into several areas that each have their own personality and style. These areas are East Devon, North Devon, and South Devon. As well as this, there’s also Exmoor and Dartmoor, so there is plenty of choice available.
If you enjoy being by the seaside, head to East Devon. Great beaches and an interesting Jurassic coastline, great for walking in the winter and lazy bucket and spade days in the summer.
North Devon is where you will find some of the most breath-taking countryside in all of Britain. It also has some wonderful beaches, and it is home to the Exmoor National Park. Covering an area of almost 19,000 acres of hilly open moorland at its highest point Dunkery Beacon, it reaches 1,703 feet.
The most populated area is South Devon. This is the counties premier holiday destination, incorporating the cities of Exeter and Plymouth. Each city has countless attractions of its own covering a wide range of interests.
Devon has one of the highest concentration Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, showing that man has inhabited the county for thousands of years- well before ‘Devon’ even gained its name! As a result, fortifications, ancient castles, and medieval homes can be found dotted across the region.
Walkers visit the region to experience its diverse selection of hiking trails. A network of pathways criss-crosses the county. As Devon is blessed with a mild climate, it is a pleasure to discover the 205-mile Coastal Path running north and south of the county.
