Why Move to Dundee?
Located on the north bank of the river Tay, said to be one of the most stunning rivers in Scotland, Dundee is Scotland’s fourth largest city. It lies around 62 miles from Edinburgh and 81 miles from Glasgow. The city was once a major whaling port and its history can be traced back over 800 years.
Today the city has seen much change, its economy is no longer dependant on its once thriving fishing and jute industries.
What was a post-industrial city now has multiple indicators of inward investment, including a growing technology sector along with an established niche in the creative digital entertainment industry in video game production.
Dundee is a compact city, making it easy to travel around by foot, although excellent public transport is available too. Its Cultural Quarter lies to the west of the city centre, where the university and many pubs, bars and cafes, as well as the renowned Rep Theatre, are all located.
Finding something to do with your spare time is no issue. Dundee’s idyllic location offers activities such as water skiing on the river or cycling along the Green Cycleway at weekends. The city’s proximity to St Andrew’s Golf Club, one of the oldest golf clubs in the world, is also a major draw for golf fanatics.
The recently completed V&A Museum development, a major £1bn project, has meant that there is even more to occupy your down time.
Not only is Dundee a great place to visit, calling it home means you have access to an affordable housing market, more reasonably priced than other Scottish cities, very convenient transport links and so much to do with regard to leisure pursuits.
Dundee Schools & Education
Scotland has a long history of universal public education. Its education system is distinctly different from other parts of the United Kingdom.
Traditionally, the Scottish system has emphasised breadth across a range of subjects, while the English, Welsh and Northern Irish systems have emphasised greater depth of education over a smaller range of subjects at secondary school level.
Schools in Dundee have a combined pupil enrolment of over 20,300, this is divided into the 37 primary schools and 8 secondary state schools in the city.
For 11-18-year olds, three of the best rated schools in Dundee are the Grove Academy, Monifieth High School and Madras College. Among some of the best primaries are Invergowrie Primary, Eastern Primary and St Andrews Primary.
Dundee has one specialist school which caters for pupils with learning difficulties aged between five and 18 from Dundee and the surrounding area.
