Why Choose Fife?
Fife, known historically as the “Kingdom of Fife,” is one of Scotland’s most distinctive regions. Nestled between the Firth of Tay and the Firth of Forth, and bordered by Perth & Kinross and Clackmannanshire, it combines rich heritage with stunning natural landscapes.
The region consistently ranks highly for quality of life, with its mix of beautiful coastlines, vibrant towns, and peaceful villages.
Major centres include Kirkcaldy, Dunfermline, and Glenrothes, but many newcomers are equally drawn to its charming smaller communities.
Families benefit from excellent schools, good healthcare provision, and strong commuter links by road, rail, and air.
The area also boasts a lively cultural and arts scene, world-famous local produce (particularly seafood), and outstanding opportunities for outdoor activities, from cycling and coastal walks to wildlife watching.
If you’re seeking a balance of affordability, lifestyle, and natural beauty in abundance, Fife is a hard location to beat.
Education in Fife
For families moving with children, education is often a top priority.
Fife Council is responsible for delivering education across the region, and schools here follow the Scottish curriculum.
There are around 160 primary schools and 25 secondary schools serving ages 12–18, alongside nine special schools and several independent options. Two private schools and a number of independent special schools also cater for families seeking alternative provision.
At higher education level, Fife is within reach of some of Scotland’s most prestigious universities, including the University of St Andrews, one of the oldest in the world.
As is common across Scotland, school placements are typically determined by catchment area, so most children attend their nearest local school.
Full details of catchment maps and admissions can be found via the Fife Council website.
