    Why Move to Gainsborough

Gainsborough is a thriving market town located within a few miles of Messingham, Walesby and Kirton in the county of Lincolnshire.

Gainsborough’s history predates Roman times. The earliest notice of Gainsborough, or Gainsburgh, was during the Saxon era. During this unsettled and war-like period, the town was the scene of various battles.

It shifted ownership, sometimes forming part of the Kingdom of Northumbria, and at others being part of Mercia In latter times, having had a long-standing history of industry, the town became a busy inland port packed with warehousing, breweries, and large engineering firms.

But it’s not just Gainsborough’s links with the past that make it such an attractive place to live. A notable feature of the Gainsborough area is the River Trent with its ‘Aegir’. The Aegir is a tidal surge which comes up from the lower reaches gaining a height of several feet at the time of the Spring Tides. Hundreds of people turn out to watch this natural phenomenon with some even surfing the waves.

The quirky layout of the historic marketplace makes for an interesting shopping experience. Favourite high-street brands sit alongside well-established independent retailers. Head to the award-winning Marshall’s Yard shopping centre for the regular farmers markets.

Around £30million has recently been granted to invest in the area. The focus is on improvements to the A16 close to the town and further projects are about to get underway to redevelop the old Lindsey Centre site, including a four-screen Savoy cinema, three commercial units and a car park.

With great transport links, a high-performing Grammar School, easy access to top universities and varying employment opportunities, it is the ideal location to bring up a family.

    Schools & Education

High on your list of priorities will be finding schools for your children.

Families moving to the area will find the town benefits from a range of local state primary and secondary schools.

Unlike most of the UK, Lincolnshire retains a tripartite system, with secondary education for many pupils decided by voluntary examination at eleven.

In less than a mile from the town, you will find six Ofsted-rated “good” schools and the “outstanding” Gainsborough Hillcrest Early Years Academy for 2-11 years.

Alongside some other high-performing schools for secondary-aged students, the town has one of the top state schools in the country. Queen Elizabeth’s High School.

A selective state grammar school for 11–18 years featuring a sixth form.

There are links beyond the town to the John Leggott Sixth Form College in Scunthorpe, North Lindsey College, and Lincoln College. The latter has a campus at Gainsborough College in Acland Street, focusing on vocational education.
