    Why Move to Gillingham?

Recorded in the Domesday book of 1086, the town of Gillingham in Kent, has an interesting and varied past. The town is believed to have been named after a local warlord called Gyllingas from the old English gyllan, meaning “to shout”. He rallied his troops into battle with blood-curdling cries.

Gillingham’s Royal Dockyard was once a centre for shipbuilding, one of which was Nelson’s vessel HMS Victory, built at the dockyard in the 1760s. At its height, thousands of workers were employed here. The other claim to fame is that the town is known for producing the famous Jubilee Clip (or hose clamp). To this day it is still being produced locally.

Gillingham has become a highly desirable place for London commuters to live and an investor hot spot due to the high number of students living in the area. Situated close to the capital yet still with relatively low property prices, over the last 10 years, the town has seen great investment and re-development.

There is no need to travel out of town for higher education either as Gillingham is home to two notable universities, the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University.

Gillingham has a significant retail and leisure hub, where residents can enjoy a lively high street including a regular bi-weekly market.

Alternatively, the nearby, Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre has even more shops to choose from and the legendary Bluewater Shopping Centre is 16 miles away, offering over 300 stores and 60 different eateries.

Sitting alongside the expansive River Medway offers plenty of opportunities to have fun by the water. Whether it is a family day out at the Strand Leisure Park or lunch at one of the popular eateries at Marina Point.

Living in Gillingham is convenient in so many ways. It offers an express route to the beautiful Kent countryside, abundant parkland, relaxing rivers, iconic coastline, and other exciting destinations far beyond its boundaries.

Most state primary schools serving Gillingham manage to maintain high standards of education following rigorous inspections by Ofsted.

One of the most successful primaries was Bredhurst Church of England Primary School, they received an overall review of “outstanding”.

As with the town’s primary schools, secondary education also commands high standards with virtually all attaining a “good” rating.

Rainham Mark Grammar School and Bradfields Academy high schools are the top performers having achieved the highest level of “outstanding”.

As well as two notable universities being in the town, MidKent College nearby, an FE college, also offers several higher education courses.

The college has over 8,500 students aged 16 years and upwards and offers a varied selection of excellent courses covering a wide range of vocational and academic subject areas.
