Thurrock council has already announced funding to upgrade the town centre and Grays Beach, build new leisure facilities and support the creation of more than 4,500 new homes, including modern flats on the Thames Estuary.

Things to do in Grays

The vast Lakeside shopping centre at Thurrock, two or three miles away from Grays, offers one of the largest concentrations of shopping facilities in Europe as well as a nine-screen cinema.

It has a range of bars, restaurants and fast food outlets, as well as designer and more budget friendly shops.

Grays has its own theatre (Thameside Theatre), a library, an attractively landscaped beach and waterfront walkway area and a long history.

The town centre is vibrant and offers both weekend and mid-week Markets, eclectic nightlife and an eclectic mix of restaurants from traditional chippies and Pie and Mash, through to French, Italian, Indian, Turkish, Chinese, and Thai cuisine.

For an escape from the urban sprawl, venture slightly further afield to Chafford Gorges Nature Park, a 200-acre nature reserve managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust and designated as the site of biological and geological interest having once been a tropical sea.

Today, many visitors come for the avid bird watching or to take a gentle stroll through one of the many scenic paths.
