    Why Move to Hastings?

The fast train will get you into the capital in one hour and 24 minutes.
A great seaside lifestyle which offers amazing scenery, diverse culture and a rich history.

As Brighton and Eastbourne property prices continue to increase, Hastings provides a cultured but cheaper alternative.

Situated on the coast in the county of East Sussex, Hastings gives its name to the Battle of Hastings, which took place 8 miles to the north-west at Senlac Hill in 1066. It later became one of the medieval Cinque Ports, which were a historic series of coastal towns in Kent, Sussex and Essex.

With an estimated population of 100,000 Hastings is seen as one of the best commuter seaside towns in the South, this is due to its excellent travel links to London meaning it has become a prime location for those who wish to have the best of both worlds; a home by the sea, and a well-paid job in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city.

Not only is London a short rail journey away, there are many other major towns in the region which are also easy to get to such as Brighton, Folkestone, Tunbridge Wells and Crawley.

Although the town is relatively large, Hastings maintains a close-knit community feel. It is jokingly referred to as “Shoreditch-on-Sea” as many arty and creative types are moving away from the capital and relocating in and around the town bringing with it a trendy and colourful vibe.

The draw of the healthy “by the seaside” lifestyle is a huge bonus, not only for families but young professionals too. Many residents head to the sea front after work to de-stress and enjoy a host of water sports such as kite surfing, swimming and paddle boarding.

Many of the UK’s towns and cities are working hard to rejuvenate their regions and Hastings is no different. Hastings Borough Council has a Corporate Plan outlining impressive initiatives to move the town forward into 2024 and beyond.

Some of the most important issues are being addressed such as making the town an eco-friendly ‘green’ town with a zero-carbon footprint as well as the building of much needed new homes.

Hastings really is a safe, healthy place to relocate to with plenty to look forward to in the years to come.

    Schools in Hastings

Being a popular town to raise a family means that Hastings has plenty of education options available to its residents.

Across the region there is a total of eighteen primary schools, as well as four secondary schools with academy status to choose from.

One of the most sought-after primaries is Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, which achieved the highly prized rating of “outstanding” by Ofsted with Guestling Bradshaw CofE and Westfield school both being rated as “good”.

St Leonards Academy Hastings Academy, New Horizons School (secondaries) all boast Ofsted inspection ratings well above satisfactory.

There are various sixth form courses, apprenticeships and part-time courses available through Sussex Coast college and The University of Brighton also has a campus in Hastings which delivers more than 30 undergraduate courses.

    Things to do in Hastings

Hastings has much to offer in the way of entertainment and activities. Being located on the coast affords the opportunity of a host of water related pursuits to get involved with.

Hastings and St. Leonards Rowing Club was founded in 1868 making it one of the oldest sport clubs in town and it is always on the lookout for members.

You can enjoy regattas in the summer season, social events and competitions in the annual South Coast Championships are an option if you want to really get involved.

There are three museums in Hastings; the Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, the Hastings Fishermen’s Museum and the Shipwreck Museum. All very interesting places to spend some time and to dig deeper into the history of the area.

Several well-kept parks are dotted around the town, Alexandra Park, one of the largest was opened in 1882 by the Prince and Princess of Wales.

The park contains gardens, open spaces, woods, a bandstand, tennis courts and a cafe.

Located just east of Hastings and set in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is Hastings Country Park. Formed in 1974 it covers (850 acres).

It incorporates sandstone cliffs, glens covered with gorse and trees, footpaths, nature trails, picnic areas and ample car parking.

    Property Prices in Hastings

Hastings old town is home to a stretch of picturesque cottages, townhouses and passageways with a surreal feel, somewhat like Diagon Alley from the Harry Potter books! Homes in these locations are very sought after and a little pricey. However, you will find many other roads in the town where property prices are a lot more affordable.

The town centre itself was constructed in the Georgian and Victorian era and as such has some very nice period homes which appear on the market from time to time. Houses situated between East Hill and West Hill offer some breathtaking views at reasonable prices.

Owning a home overlooking the ocean is a possibility in Hastings. Currently on the market for £140,000 is a one bedroomed seafront property overlooking the promenade and close to local shopping facilities, amenities and mainline rail links to London.

For cheaper homes look to the outskirts of town where one-bedroom apartments are currently selling for £60,000 upwards.

For a three-bedroom family home you can expect to pay £150,000 and located in the expensive Rosemary Lane a large home will cost over £900,000.
