    Why Move to Herefordshire?

Herefordshire is tucked away in a peaceful corner of the UK, bordering Wales in the West Midlands. It remains one of England’s most rural and sparsely populated counties, where open countryside, farmland and rolling hills are never far away.

Around a third of the population lives in Hereford (now home to just over 63,000 residents), while a significant proportion live in the county’s well-known market towns, including Leominster, Ross-on-Wye and Ledbury. Beyond these centres, Herefordshire is characterised by villages, hamlets and a strong sense of rural life.

Land use across the county remains largely agricultural. Herefordshire is nationally recognised for its fruit and cider production, as well as the famous Hereford cattle breed, and this rural heritage continues to shape both the landscape and local communities. The county offers a blend of traditional market towns and countryside settings framed by the Malvern Hills to the east and the Brecon Beacons just across the Welsh border.

Despite its rural feel, Herefordshire remains well connected. Road links provide access towards South Wales and the West Midlands, while regular rail services connect Hereford with London, Birmingham, Manchester and Cardiff. Towns such as Worcester, Cheltenham and Gloucester are also easily reached by road.

Although you’re never too far from larger towns and cities, Herefordshire feels distinctly unhurried and removed from urban pressures. The county is steeped in history, with medieval churches, black-and-white timber buildings and historic market squares contributing to a thriving tourism scene.

Two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty — the Wye Valley to the south and the Malvern Hills to the east — further enhance the county’s appeal. These landscapes provide endless opportunities for walking, cycling and outdoor pursuits.

With its strong community spirit, low population density and welcoming towns and villages, Herefordshire continues to appeal to families seeking a safe environment and to those looking for a peaceful place to retire. Several locations, including Hereford and Ledbury, have featured in recent years among lists of desirable places to live in the UK.

For anyone drawn to unspoilt countryside, historic surroundings and a relaxed pace of life, there are few counties that match the distinctive semi-rural lifestyle that Herefordshire offers.

    Working in Herefordshire

One of the defining features of living in Herefordshire is its strong rural economy, with employment traditionally centred around agriculture. That said, the modern county economy is more diverse than many people expect. Alongside farming, key sectors include manufacturing, food and drink production, public services, logistics and tourism, all of which play an important role in supporting local employment.

Some of the county’s largest private-sector employers are well established names. Cargill operates a major meat processing facility, while H. P. Bulmer remains a significant local employer and is best known for producing Strongbow, the UK’s market-leading cider. Westons Cider, based in Much Marcle, is another major employer and continues to grow its national and international presence.

In the public sector, Herefordshire Council and the NHS are among the largest employers, providing a wide range of roles across administration, healthcare, education and social care.

Self-employment is also a notable feature of the local workforce, with around 15% of residents working for themselves. The continued rise of remote and hybrid working has made Herefordshire increasingly attractive to freelancers, consultants and small business owners who value space, connectivity and quality of life. Improved digital infrastructure across many rural areas has helped support this shift.

For some residents, commuting slightly beyond the county remains a practical option. Depending on where you live, travelling to nearby towns and cities such as Cheltenham, Worcester and Gloucester is manageable and often avoids the congestion associated with larger urban centres. For example, Ledbury sits within easy reach of Cheltenham and Gloucester, while villages such as Bishop’s Frome are within a reasonable commute of Worcester.

For those actively seeking employment, national job platforms such as Totaljobs regularly advertise several thousand vacancies across Herefordshire and the surrounding regions, making it a useful starting point for assessing current opportunities.

    Herefordshire Schools & Education

Access to good schooling is a key consideration for many families moving to Herefordshire. As a predominantly rural county, location matters, particularly when it comes to school travel times, so careful planning is essential before committing to a specific village or town.

Herefordshire operates a comprehensive education system, supported by a mix of state-funded and independent schools. The majority of state secondary schools cater for pupils aged 11–16, with further education colleges providing post-16 pathways.

Across the county, there are around 80 primary schools, 15 secondary schools, a number of specialist and alternative provision schools, and several further education colleges offering academic, vocational and apprenticeship routes. As with any region, performance varies between schools, so researching individual catchment areas is important.

A sensible first step is to use the government’s Get Information About Schools service, which allows you to compare schools by location, Ofsted rating, performance data, age range and other key criteria. Independent comparison platforms such as Snobe and School Guide can also provide helpful insights and parent-focused summaries.

By narrowing your search to a few preferred areas and visiting schools in person where possible, it’s entirely achievable to find an education setting in Herefordshire that suits your child’s needs.

With thoughtful planning and early research, families moving to Herefordshire can feel confident about securing strong educational options alongside the county’s well-known quality of life.

    Things to do in Herefordshire

Many of the county’s attractions revolve around the outdoors. Unsurprisingly as there is so much open space on offer.

Getting out into the fresh air no matter what season it may be, is so good for the body and mind. It is also great for families with children of all ages.

Small children love nothing better than rummaging around in a forest, searching for chestnuts or conkers, or simply having a picnic in the woods. They see it all as a wonderful adventure.

The Wye Valley AONB forms part of the south of the county straddling the border with Wales. The valley is recognised for its limestone gorge scenery and dense native woodlands. There is plenty of wildlife as well, the ideal place to spend time exploring its vast area.

The river Wye meanders through the valley offering lots of little spots where children can paddle and search for river creatures such as small fish.

Many come to the area to hike the Wye Valley Walk. A long-distance footpath that follows the course of the river Wye. The 136-mile walk is marked out by circular yellow waymark arrows, finger posts, and signs showing the path’s logo, a leaping salmon. Most of the route follows Public Rights of Way.

To the west of the county is the Brecon Beacons National Park and to the east are the Cotswolds. It will take years to explore all the incredible and beautiful green landscapes both within and close to the county.

You will also find that Herefordshire has a huge number of other places of interest waiting to be explored.
