    Why Move to Herefordshire?

Herefordshire is tucked away in a quiet part of the UK, on the border of Wales, in the Midlands. The county is one of the most rural and sparsely populated counties in England, nowhere is too far from acres of open green space.

Just under a third of the population lives in Hereford city (circa 61,500 people), and just under a fifth in one of the three largest market towns of Leominster (12,400), Ross-on-Wye (11,200), and Ledbury (9,900).

The land use is mostly agricultural, and the county is well known for its fruit and cider production, and for the Hereford cattle breed. It is an ideal combination of quaint market towns and villages hugged by the Malvern Hills and the Brecon Beacons.

Though it may be one of the more remote counties it still manages to supply adequate travel links. But the county is connected to the motorway network linking South Wales to the West Midlands and has direct and regular rail links to London, Birmingham, Manchester, and Cardiff. Worcester, Cheltenham, Gloucester, and even Birmingham can all be reached directly by road.

You might only be a relatively short distance from large towns and cities, but you certainly feel a world away. Steeped in history Herefordshire has a large number of ancient buildings and places to discover making it a flourishing tourist destination.

Herefordshire’s two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Wye Valley, located south of Hereford, and the Malvern Hills, in the east of the county, add to the region’s beauty and attraction. Being rural, community is key. Towns and villages across the region are friendly and close-knit supplying safe places to raise a family or as peaceful places to retire to.

Many locations within the county have been named at some point over the last few years among the best places to live in the UK, including Hereford and Ledbury.

Scarcely populated for the most part, within an enviable unspoilt countryside environment, there are few UK counties that match the relaxing semi-rural kind of lifestyle Herefordshire does.

    Working in Herefordshire

One of the obvious facts about living in Herefordshire is that employment tends to lean towards the agricultural sector. However, manufacturing, food and drink, production, services, and tourism also play their part in contributing to the county’s economy.

Cargill Meats and H. P. Bulmer’s are two of the largest private sector employers, with the Council and NHS being the largest public sector employers. Other industries include Weston’s cider of Much Marcle, and Bulmer’s cider, from Hereford, which produces the UK market leader Strongbow.

Additionally, 15% of the population are self-employed. As working from home has become so popular following the pandemic, there are some great opportunities for start-up businesses. Some residents opt for travelling just a little further for work. Depending on where you decide to reside within the county, the journey to work to reach towns such as Cheltenham, Worcester, and Gloucester are not too much of a hardship.

Ledbury is just a 20-minute trip from Cheltenham and just 17 miles to Gloucester. Whilst the pretty village of Bishop’s Frome sits 16 miles from Worcester. This makes commuting a practical and not too stressful choice.

Totaljobs, the online job agency is currently advertising around 2800 vacancies both within the county and a little beyond. Visit Totaljobs website to find out if there is anything advertised that would suit your experience, skills, and qualifications. (www.totaljobs.com/jobs/in-herefordshire)

    Herefordshire Schools & Education

Having access to good schooling is so important these days. Particularly so for families with young children. As the county is predominantly rural, the school run can be tiresome if you live too far out in the sticks.

Before you finally decide where exactly you are planning to relocate to, there needs to be some serious research undertaken first. Herefordshire has a comprehensive education system that also includes several independent schools.

The majority of state secondary schools in the county provide education for the 11–16-year age group. Broken down, there are 81 primaries, 15 secondaries, 7 special or alternative schools, and 4 main Further education colleges.

A good proportion of these schools and colleges perform well however, as with all counties a few do not. To ensure you make the best possible choice, it is wise to narrow your search to several locations and then spend some time visiting schools there.

A sensible place to begin your school search is to check online first. The Government has an excellent tool to help you with your investigations. You can search for schools, colleges, multi-academy trusts, and sponsors. As well as narrow the results down to performance, Ofsted ratings, gender, and religious affiliations.

Other great sites include Snobe and SchoolGuide.co.uk

With a good amount of forethought and planning, you will have your children enrolled in one of the best schools in Herefordshire in no time at all.

    Things to do in Herefordshire

Many of the county’s attractions revolve around the outdoors. Unsurprisingly as there is so much open space on offer.

Getting out into the fresh air no matter what season it may be, is so good for the body and mind. It is also great for families with children of all ages.

Small children love nothing better than rummaging around in a forest, searching for chestnuts or conkers, or simply having a picnic in the woods. They see it all as a wonderful adventure.

The Wye Valley AONB forms part of the south of the county straddling the border with Wales. The valley is recognised for its limestone gorge scenery and dense native woodlands. There is plenty of wildlife as well, the ideal place to spend time exploring its vast area.

The river Wye meanders through the valley offering lots of little spots where children can paddle and search for river creatures such as small fish.

Many come to the area to hike the Wye Valley Walk. A long-distance footpath that follows the course of the river Wye. The 136-mile walk is marked out by circular yellow waymark arrows, finger posts, and signs showing the path’s logo, a leaping salmon. Most of the route follows Public Rights of Way.

To the west of the county is the Brecon Beacons National Park and to the east are the Cotswolds. It will take years to explore all the incredible and beautiful green landscapes both within and close to the county.

You will also find that Herefordshire has a huge number of other places of interest waiting to be explored.
