    Why Move to Northamptonshire?

Recognised as being the heart of England, Northamptonshire sits as close to the middle of our country as you can get. The region’s rural charm is hard to beat. The county is often referred to as ‘the rose of the shires’ due to its abundance of scenic villages complete with thatched cottages and country pubs.

The M1 runs straight through the county in a north-south direction all the way from London to Leeds making light work of connections. Plus, you have the added benefit of being served by 6 airports. Surprisingly, it is a relatively easy commute from Northampton (1 hour) and Milton Keynes (40 mins) to London Euston station.

Plenty of residents have already made the move from our capital city and are reaping the benefits from living in one of the county’s rural idylls, along with its excellent education options for their children. North Northamptonshire Council and West Northamptonshire Council combined administer education provision in the county. 80% of Northamptonshire’s primaries and 70% of its secondaries have been ranked “good” or “outstanding” by Ofsted.

If shopping is something you enjoy on a regular basis, Northamptonshire has some excellent retail opportunities. One of the biggest malls in Northamptonshire is the Grosvenor Centre, situated in the heart of Chester. Not only can you shop till you drop here, but you can also take in some of Chester’s historical tourist attractions while you are visiting.

With house prices in many areas lower than the national average, Northamptonshire is more than just an incredibly desirable spot to call home. Getting away from it all whenever possible is important for us all. Northamptonshire is full of stunning landscapes, ideal for walks and days outside. Visit Rockingham Forest or Irchester Country Park, both are huge natural open spaces.

The county is landlocked, however, the River Nene, 100 miles in length, is navigable for 88 of those miles and offers ample opportunity for hiring a boat, canoeing, paddle skiing, and lots of other water-based activities. Northamptonshire is an undiscovered gem that manages to tick all the boxes as far as quality of life is concerned. Its beautiful natural spaces, market towns, and charming communities make Northamptonshire a hit in so many ways.

    Working in Northamptonshire

Historically, the main industry in the county was the manufacturing of boots and shoes. Northamptonshire is the birthplace of the British shoemaking industry which dates back almost 900 years. Today the economy in Northamptonshire is very strong and growing fast, there are thousands of jobs waiting to be filled all over the county.

Large employers include the breakfast cereal manufacturers Weetabix, in Burton Latimer, the Carlsberg brewery in Northampton, Avon Products, Siemens, Barclaycard, Saxby Bros Ltd, and Golden Wonder. Not only is there work to be found within big companies, but, Experian has recently named Northampton as one of the best places in the UK to start a small business.

If you have the entrepreneurial spirit and the drive to start your own business, Northamptonshire could be the place to do it. Other areas where there are employment opportunities are within the leisure industries followed closely by the motor industry.
Described as “Motorsport Valley” a global hub for motorsports, the Silverstone Circuit, Rockingham Motor Speedway, and Santa Pod Raceway combined manage to attract more than 2.1 million visitors per year to the region.

These same visitors spend a total of more than £131 million within the county.
Moving to Northamptonshire may well be a great place to commute from, but its thriving economy means many people are instead, commuting to the area for business instead of working outside the region.

    Northamptonshire Schools & Education

If you are planning on raising a family in the county, or you already have a growing family, then education really matters. An assortment of prosperous education facilities is dotted around the Northamptonshire area ranging from primary and nursery education to secondary education and beyond.

If you have young children 5-11 years, Northamptonshire has around 250 primary schools to choose from making it quite a difficult task to find the best in your area. Several online websites can take the hard work out of your search. Snobe is a handy tool. You can sort schools by Ofsted rating, phase of education, locations, and several more criteria.

According to Snobe, the county has 11 outstanding schools, 91 good schools, 6 are satisfactory, and 28 requiring improvements.
To find out more visit Snobe directly www.snobe.co.uk/find-schools

To further assist you with your search for a suitable secondary school, in 2020, the local NorthantsLive newspaper published some interesting data listing the 10 best secondary schools in the county based on 50 different measures. Education provision for older students is well catered for. 7 FE colleges are available and there is one highly regarded university in Northamptonshire.

Spread across two campuses, the University of Northampton offers courses from foundation and undergraduate level to postgraduate, professional, and doctoral qualifications.

    Things to do in Northamptonshire

Most counties have their own attractions which are unique to them, and Northamptonshire is probably best known for being the home of The Grand Prix circuit at Silverstone.

Located in Towcester, Silverstone holds several events annually and not just motor racing events.

It is also where the Bennetts British Superbike championships are held. High octane fun all round.

Northampton & Lamport Railway is a steam and heritage diesel tourist railway. Based at Pitsford & Brampton station roughly 5 miles north of Northampton, it runs parallel with the Brampton Valley Way, which means you can walk or cycle alongside it all year round.
Stately homes and historic houses are dotted across the region.

Althorpe house is arguably the most famous. Childhood home of Princess Dianna, it is a wonderful attraction. Showcasing one of Europe’s finest private collections of furniture, paintings, and ceramics, each intriguing room of this magnificent family home has a fascinating story of its own.

Northampton Museum and Art Gallery have just had a massive refurb. Packed with exhibits including the particularly interesting history of shoemaking. The collection tells stories of the people of Northampton and its international shoemaking significance.
Northampton has a pleasant town centre which is great for exploring on foot.

There are several historic churches in the heart of town along with cultural attractions such as the Royal & Derngate theatre complex and Northampton Cathedral.
