A cathedral city in the heart of Cambridgeshire, Peterborough emerged as the region’s industrial capital following the building of a major rail junction just outside the city centre. Many people pass straight through the city on their daily travels as they move from the capital to the North. However, with more open green spaces per person than anywhere else in the UK, affordable property prices and a surge in working opportunities, many people are now stopping to take note of this rural hinterland.
Peterborough continues to attract people not only from the UK but also abroad with a noticeably large density of Italian migration. The city is building new homes faster than any other UK city and is predicted to be the fastest growing English city by 2025. Yet despite being one of the fastest growing cities in the UK, its property prices remain affordable. With the current average property price in Peterborough being just £225,826, nearly a third of London’s average price, more and more people are venturing further afield where their money stretches further. In fact, according to a Lloyds Bank survey, the city has been named as one of the top best places to live if you commute to London for work with a regular rail service to Kings Cross taking 45 minutes.
As with so many former industrial cities, Peterborough has undergone a massive transformation in recent years. A regeneration project costing £12million has been spent on improvements to the town centre, including the Cathedral Square which has been given a facelift to become a popular piazza, where you can dine and shop. The council are also investing a further £100 million on future developments, which include the rejuvenation of the Queensgate Centre and North Westgate areas, incorporating new homes, retail outlets, restaurants and a cinema. The local transport system infrastructure is excellent also, with all major areas and attractions accessible in ten minutes or less. Working in Peterborough
Starting off as a market town, when the Great Northern Railway’s line from London to York opened in 1850, it transformed Peterborough into an industrial centre. Nowadays, a significant proportion of the new jobs being created in the city are in financial services and distribution.
According to the second annual Cambridgeshire Ltd report, Peterborough is now home to 18 of the county’s top 100 firms. The largest of which are the BGL Group followed by the food and beverage firm, Russell Burgess and Ideal Shopping with a combined total turnover of £738 million.
Leading economic think tank, Centre for Cities, placed Peterborough second in a list of job creation cities over the past 100 years and employment is said to be very high at around 75%. Gross earnings in the city stand up well compared to other cities in the UK. Although a significant number commute to London for work where wages are higher. Following the approval of several very large housing and retail projects in and around Peterborough, new job opportunities are opening in the industries of construction, retail, hotel and leisure. There are also currently a number of vacancies the engineering and IT fields.

Schools & Education

The city is currently without a university. After Loughborough University closed its Peterborough campus in 2003, Peterborough Regional College began talks with Anglia Ruskin University to develop a new university campus for the city. Future plans have yet to be confirmed.
