With roots stretching back over 1000 years, the historic university and minster town of Reading is located in the county of Berkshire. It sits in the Thames Valley where the River Thames and River Kennet converge.
Following its humble beginnings as a trading and religious centre during the medieval period, Reading has now become one of the most important and prosperous towns in the Thames Valley, boasting one of Europe’s strongest economies.
Living in Reading has so many plusses but top of the list is the fantastic transport links by road, rail and air. Only 38 miles from London with a train service to Paddington that takes just half an hour, it is one of Britain’s leading hi-tech hubs thanks, in part, to its unique location.

Schools & Education

Reading College has provided further education in Reading since 1955. The college has 6,000 local learners on over 900 further education courses. It plays a vital part in meeting the learning and training needs of local people and local businesses.
Home to a top higher education provider, the University of Reading is spread across four major campuses. Established in 1892, the university is is an affiliate of the highly prestigious Oxford University.
The University of West London maintains a presence in the town for its higher education students, principally in nursing, but has now divested itself from its previous ownership of Reading College.
Things to do in Reading
Reading is at the heart of the Great West Way national trail. It’s a great base from which to explore the region, with lots to do by both day and night in the town itself.
Reading has the advantage of two rivers, the Thames and the Kennet, which meet in the town, offering residents some stunning riverside and canal-side walks to enjoy at any time of the year.
Reading Museum is housed in the fine Victorian gothic town hall and the associated Riverside Museum is at Blake’s Lock. There are also two museums at Reading University, the Museum of English Rural Life and the Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology.
Reading Abbey is Located at the heart of Reading’s Abbey Quarter. Historically Reading Abbey was one of Europe’s largest and wealthiest medieval buildings and is the burial place of Henry I. It is a lovely place to spend an hour or two soaking in some history and local culture.
Caversham Court Gardens is situated adjacent to a lovely stretch of the River Thames. A gorgeous public garden and mansion located in the Caversham, it is worth the visit. The tranquil site that lies within the St Peter’s conservation area, offers a reclusive and charming outdoor retreat just a short drive away from the centre of Reading.

Property prices
Reading is in the running when it comes to affordable property. Together with a buoyant housing market, excellent job prospects and great travel connections more and more people are looking towards Reading as a potential relocation destination.
There are lots of options available depending on your personal circumstances. First time buyers are spoilt for choice. As well as some older style homes, there are plenty of assisted purchase new build opportunities for those trying to get a foot on the property ladder.

The average price for property in Reading stood at £428,591 in January 2020. This is a fall of 0.64% in the last three months (since October 2019) and fall of 0.65% of the past year.
