Swanage is located on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset and is the Eastern Gateway for exploring the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. It makes an ideal family friendly location in which to live.
Swanage’s stunning coastal location and proximity to many Jurassic Coast gems is what makes it special.
The town was originally a small port and fishing village which became a significant quarrying port during the time of the Roman occupation. The industry grew from mining the distinctive Purbeck marble used for decorative purposes in buildings as far away as London.
A seaside resort of some note, Swanage has been the focus of family holidays for generations hosting a bevy of wonderful festivals on a monthly basis from March to October, including art, blues, jazz, comedy, carnivals.
Tourism is the main stay of the local economy, employing the thousands of workers required to cater for the influx of visitors.
But aside from the holidaymakers, plenty of people call the town home so it is good to know that there are some very good local schools and excellent transport links when needed, to places such as Bournemouth, Poole, and Weymouth.
The bulk of Swanage’s properties are huddled around the sweeping sandy bay. Inevitably, the homes with the best views are the most in demand but these are not always the most attractive. Some properties further up the sweeping hillside behind the town have the advantage of both sea and rural outlooks.
The main town centre has been upgraded and improved in recent years and is now a pleasant place to shop, spend time and socialise.

Swanage Primary School, St Mark’s Church of England Primary School and St George’s Church of England Primary School are all performing well, according to Ofsted as are most primaries in the town.
The main secondary is The Swanage School. Inspected in 2018, it was awarded a “good” rating again. Ofsted noted that the student’s behaviour was very good and that their performance in the core subjects of English and mathematics has always been strong.
Things to do in Swanage
Arguably, the towns greatest assets are its location in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (Dorset AONB) – and especially its beautiful, Blue Flag sandy bay.
There are other things to do in and around Swanage as well. Lots of little quaint villages are just waiting to be discovered. Many are reachable on foot via one of several Coastal paths or cycleways.
Lulworth is home to a 17th Century castle set in acres of grounds, and several of Britain’s most-loved natural landforms, including the stunning horseshoe-shaped Lulworth Cove and the iconic limestone arch of Durdle Door.
Ride the very popular steam train through the countryside from Swanage and back.
Or walk along the Victorian pier and gaze out over Swanage Bay from Durlston Castle.
Book a day with one of the local outdoor adventure specialists and have a go at coasteering, abseiling, climbing, paddle-boarding, or kayaking.
On a good day there is nothing better than a leisurely fishing trip just off the coast. No matter if you have not done it before, the friendly helpers will show you the ropes, plus rod and tackle hire is included in the price, so all you need to bring along with you is your sea legs!
If the weather is not so good, and we all know that happens in the UK sometimes, head to the Beach Gardens Sports Park. Here you can partake in a game of tennis or bowls or have a little fun on the putting green.
The Swanage Museum with transport you back. It is the perfect place to learn all about the dinosaurs which once roamed the whole of Dorset.

But, on the market currently, there are several bargains such as a two-bedroom flat situated in the heart of the town for £180,000. Or if it is a family sized property you are searching for, these start from £265,000.
Of course, it is the homes in Swanage with commanding views which fetch the highest prices. Rabling Road and De Moulham Road have some very impressive properties but beware, they start at £900,000 upwards.
For a brand-new abode, Barratt Homes are in the middle of completing a housing development called Compass Point, consisting of three- and four-bedroom homes starting at £379,000.
