Why Move to Thanet?
The areas new high speed rail links have led to an increased interest in Thanet. Both the capital and European destinations can be reached within hours. Made up of 9 towns and villages, this 64-mile area of Kent was once an island almost wholly formed from chalk. While in the past it was separated from the mainland by the 600-metre-wide (2,000 ft) Wantsum Channel, it is no longer classed as an island.
What was a very arable area during the early 1800’s, given to growing corn, has become a firm favourite with holidaymakers heading to the creation of the Victorian coastal towns of Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate.
In fact, Thanet’s three main towns top the list of most desirable coastal locations for buyers moving out of London. They certainly provide prospective buyers with so much more for their money when compared to London’s property prices, hence the attraction.
There is lots to do in the region particularly water related. Kents seaside destinations provide a wealth of traditional fun and entertainment whilst the many small bays dotted along the coast offer a more quiet and secluded way to spend time enjoying the North Sea waters.
Easy accessibility is one of the main requirements people look for in a new location and the Thanet region provides just this. Two main roads provide quick routes in and out and onwards into other towns and cities nearby such as Sandwich, Canterbury, and Dover.
Thanet was once an area considered to be just a bit too far away to be considered a feasible commute. Fast forward to today and Thanet is attracting the attention of many folk looking for a healthier lifestyle at a stunning coastal location complete with decent amenities.
Add to all this the benefit of a lower cost of living and all in a bigger home and it makes Thanet a winner all round.
Thanet Schools & Education
Families moving to the region will not have to lower their expectations when it comes to education standards either.
Thanet has a good selection of state and private schools. There is a choice of around 16 state primaries and 4 secondaries plus a number of schools which provide although education from 4-19 years.
There is one Grammar school available, Dane Court, located in Broadstairs which is “outstanding” according to Ofsted. Unfortunately, it is heavily over-subscribed in all year groups and holds waiting lists so applying for a place as soon as possible is advisable.
There are plenty of Ofsted rated “good” schools covering the area and several “outstanding” ones too such as Cliftonville Primary School in Margate and Callis Grange Nursery and Infant School in Broadstairs.
For good secondaries, Ursuline College in Westgate-on-Sea, a Specialist Sports College, and a Roman Catholic Academy for pupils aged 11 to 19 years performs well. As does King Ethelbert School in Birchington-on-Sea which is celebrating some fantastic GCSE and BTEC results this year.
East Kent College is a provider of further education in Thanet and a Training Provider that works with local businesses to raise the level of education across the region.
Canterbury Christ Church University currently has a campus in Broadstairs, serving Media, Art, and Design subjects.
