Why move to Wallingford
This unassuming but ancient little market town is a great find for a number of reasons.
Packed with history. King Alfred the Great built Wallingford in the 9th century as a defence against the Vikings. You can still see the original Saxon ramparts today.
Several large locations are easy to get to from here. Didcot is 14 minutes by road, Oxford 29 minutes, Reading 26 minutes, and Swindon 55 minutes. Plus, it is just within reach of commuting to London, one hour and 15 minutes.
So that is the journey to work sorted. Now let’s look at schools in the area. Wallingford scores very highly here. Home to three state primary schools and Wallingford School, a secondary with 6th Form all of which perform well. Three private schools are available within three miles of the town.
What about getting outside? Wallingford is bordered by both the Wessex Downs and Chiltern Hills Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), so this box also receives a huge tick. The area has access to several parks, green spaces, and Children’s play areas, which supply residents and visitors with opportunities to enjoy sports, leisure, and outdoor recreation.
Compact, self-contained, and particularly attractive, the main town square dates to the Saxon times and is the heart and soul of Wallingford. The area has been used for markets for hundreds of years and still holds four markets today.
Surrounding the marketplace are plenty of stores, both well-known retailers and an array of great independents sitting side by side. Plus, Wallingford has lots of inviting places to eat and drink. The traditional George Hotel and the Coach & Horses pub come highly recommended.
Wallingford fits the bill if you are hankering to live in a location offering a lifestyle that focuses on community, evident in its many sports and social clubs. Nestled on the banks of the river Thames, Wallingford is certainly picturesque and historic. It also makes an ideal spot to settle long-term.
Wallingford Schools & Education
Is finding a good school for your child a concern for you?
If you move to Wallingford, there is no need to worry as there are many highly regarded schools.
St John’s (a primary school), Fir Tree, (a junior school), and St Nicholas (an infants’ school) are all located within the town itself, with an additional 8 primary schools available less than three miles from the town.
The majority of pupils aged 4-11 continue their education at Wallingford School, a secondary school with academy status.
The school has enjoyed considerable success academically since 2012 finishing at or near the top of the performance tables for Oxfordshire for A-Level and GCSEs.
Students can choose to stay at Wallingford Academy as it does offer 6th form education.
Alternatively, there are three further education colleges nearby: Abingdon & Witney College, City of Oxford College, and Henley College. All are found close enough to get to daily.
One of the closest universities happens to be The University of Oxford, it has a reputation that speaks for itself.
A large, internationally renowned institution Oxford University has roughly 100 major academic departments, which are overseen by the four academic divisions: Medical Sciences; Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences; Humanities and Social Sciences.
