    Why move to Wetherby?

Wetherby is a market town on the banks of the River Wharfe which in 2018 The Times named one of the best places to live in the UK. Set within the affluent ‘golden triangle’ of Leeds, Harrogate and York, Wetherby is an affluent and desirable relocation destination.

The town’s heyday was in the 1700’s when it was a prime staging post for travellers. Today those various inns and alehouses have helped render it a permanent location for various families looking for a slower pace of life. Here’s why it continues to prove so popular:

Excellent commuter credentials with easy access to Leeds, York, Harrogate, etc via the A1(M). The railway station at Kirk Hammerton is just 20 minutes away and provides onwards connections to London and the rest of the country.

Tons of amenities and leisure activities including an enviable range of pubs, an independent cinema and retailers and Wetherby’s famous race track.

Weekly markets held in the square selling the best and freshest vegetables, pictures frames, rugs, flowers, stationery and much more.

Beautiful and large families homes with Georgian décor and features and the backdrop of the stunning countryside on your doorstop.

Excellent and high performing primary and secondary schools within a short distance.

If it’s a breath of fresh country air you are after but easy access to city life for work and play, then you can do far worse than Wetherby.

    Schools & Education

Wetherby houses some exceptional primary schools, including St Joseph’s Catholic school Wetherby and Primrose Lane Boston Spa. Both have been rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, with the education regulator judging Crossley Street and Deighton Gates to also be of a ‘Good’ standard.

The local secondary school, Wetherby High School is run by the City of Leeds Local Education Authority and teaches pupils from the ages of 11-16, with a sixth form providing further education up to 18.

Further afield there are several excellent independent schools on offer in the area, including Leeds Grammar and Queen Ethelburgas which both boast excellent GCSE and A Level results.

The closest college is Leeds City College which offers a wide range of qualifications including A Levels, BTECs and other vocational qualifications. It also provides industry standard qualifications in sectors such as health and social care, catering and hair and beauty, among others.

    Working in Wetherby

The local economy is small and largely centred around the market and local businesses. As such many residents opt to commute to work to the larger cities and towns of Leeds, York and Harrogate.

That said, there is a number of national and international companies based in nearby industrial estates. There is plenty of opportunity to work for the five large national supermarkets which offer employment across all aspects: customer service, warehousing, distribution and management.

IT jobs are becoming increasingly available in the digital age, while work in the many hotels, bars, and other areas of the leisure industry is also available both full and part-time.

    Things to Do in Wetherby

Wetherby is a vibrant market town with no shortage of leisure activities and shopping facilities. It’s prime location in the heart of the Yorkshire countryside means it is well placed for days out exploring the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors and the East Coast.

The popular farmer’s market is held once a month and features a variety of produce and specialty products. Wetherby’s Thursday market is a time-honoured tradition dating back to 1240 when the Knights Templar were granted the right to hold a weekly market by the Royal Charter. Check it out and pick up a bargain.

Sport plays a large part of the community with the Leeds United training ground based at Thorp Arch. TV cameras descend on the revamped horse racing course throughout the year with an extensive racing programme that takes place over 300 acres of rolling parkland.

The annual Wetherby Arts Festival, which began in 1977, aims to promote the arts by providing a platform for local groups to perform. The festival draws in large audiences every October to celebrate the best in music, dance and theatre, amongst many more.

    Property Prices in Wetherby

Wetherby is an attractive and desirable area, particularly among young families. As such the average property values have gone up by 0.57% during the past year and the average property price now stands at £407,495. (As per Zoopla April 2019)

The town offers an array of housing options that range from waterside penthouses and maisonettes to small terraces and semi-detached houses.

There are some lovely new developments situated along the Wharfe. Head to Spofforth Hill if you are looking for a large Victorian detached home. Some pretty Victorian terraced are located in the centre of the town and the up-market area of Linton which sits next to the local golf club.
