    Why Move to Wiltshire?

Characterised by its high downland and wide valleys, Wiltshire is a predominately rural county, almost half of which falls within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Covering and area of 1,346 square miles, Wiltshire is landlocked and borders six counties: Dorset, Somerset, Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire.

The county is most notable for being the location of the Stonehenge and Avebury stone circles and other ancient landmarks, as well as being the training area for the British Army.

There are 21 towns in Wiltshire, the largest being Swindon, and one city, Salisbury along with lots of charming small villages and hamlets. Those searching for a home in the county will find a great number of interesting and quirky locations to choose from.

Very well-located Wiltshire enjoys easy access south via the A303 or north via the M3, M25 & M1. Three railway stations serve the region ensuring great connectivity to most towns in the county and beyond.

Wiltshire is becoming increasingly popular with London commuters not just because of its convenient travel links, but it offers fantastic schooling in both the state and private sector and better value for money than some of the more well-known commuter areas in the south.

Stonehenge is not the only well-known attraction to be found in Wiltshire. Longleat Safari Park also offers a fantastic family day out. First opened to the public in 1949, the ancestral home of the Marquess of Bath Longleat remains a popular venue.

Wiltshire is one of Britain’s best kept secrets with millennia of history, fantastic shopping, family attractions and easy transport links. It ticks all the boxes.

    Wiltshire Schools & Education

Wiltshire has a selection of strong choices for both primary and senior schools so parents moving into the county will have no problem finding a good school.

Schools of note include St John’s in Marlborough. A highly aspirational and high performing 11-18 co-educational Academy. The state of the art and unique buildings are integrated into a landscape that is classed as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

High achieving primaries who have all received an “outstanding” rating by Ofsted include Sutton Veny CofE School, Sarum St Paul’s CofE (VA) Primary School, St Michaels C of E Primary and Preshute C of E Primary. However, there are many more well-regarded schools to choose from across the county.

Visit the school rating website Snobe to find out how well each school is performing in Wiltshire both at primary and secondary level.

For independent education, there are eleven private schools including Marlborough College, St Mary’s Calne, Dauntsey’s and Warminster School.

Four further education colleges are available. Some also provide higher education: New College (Swindon); Wiltshire College (Chippenham, Trowbridge, and Salisbury); Salisbury Sixth Form College; and Swindon College.

Wiltshire is also home to two Technical Colleges: South Wiltshire UTC and UTC Swindon, both specialising in engineering.

Unusually, the county does not have its own university, the closest would be the University of Bath. However, Bath Spa University has a centre at Corsham Court in Corsham, and Oxford Brookes University maintains a minor campus in Swindon.

    Things to do in Wiltshire

Even for the most fastidious individuals, Wiltshire offers a fantastic range of things to do when you have time on your hands.

Swindon Outlet Village and Orbital Retail Park give shoppers a really good choice when it comes to retail therapy and the added bonus of being able to grab a real bargain.

If you enjoy getting out and about on your bike, the Wiltshire Cycleway circles the county for 160 miles. The route has been designed to be cycled in an anti-clockwise direction and can be shortened by using our cross-county routes along the Kennet and Avon Canal, through the Vale of Pewsey or down the Wylye Valley.

Stonehenge is the star attraction. This prehistoric monument is known throughout the world. The iconic 13 stones are synonymous with Wiltshire. The stone circle itself forms the highlight of any visit to the World Heritage Site and is not to be missed. However, the Stonehenge Visitor Centre completes a day out at this world-famous monument.

Salisbury Cathedral is a truly remarkable building, a testimony to the faith and practical skills of the medieval craftsmen who built it, but it is much more than a historical monument. It is a living church and a place of prayer. As the Cathedral Church of the Salisbury diocese, it is the Mother Church of several hundred parishes in Wiltshire and Dorset. It is also a centre of pilgrimage for hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

The museum of the Great Western Railway is in Swindon and housed in a beautifully restored Grade II railway building in the heart of the former Swindon railway works. The museum tells the story of the men and women who built, operated, and travelled on the Great Western Railway, often referred to by historians and railway fans as ‘God’s Wonderful Railway’.

    Wiltshire is teeming with areas of outstanding natural beauty;
The North Wessex Downs includes ancient woodland, open downland and chalk streams and grasslands and large scale open arable farmland. It is the third largest AONB in the country. Forming part of the AONB is The Savernake Forest with its ancient woodland

    Wiltshire Property

One of the main reasons so many people choose to relocate to Wiltshire is the wide-open space it offers. A far cry from the hectic lifestyle experience living in a large city presents.

Whether you are searching for a new home which is on the outskirts of town but has access to good amenities and schools or you really want to live within a small close-knit community and forego the full trappings of modern living, the county covers all.

With regard to price, you can expect to pay an average of £459,384 for a detached home, £271,785 for a semi-detached property, £230,415 for a terrace and £166,095 for a flat.

Although these are average values, it is possible in some areas such as Swindon, to purchase a terraced house for just £52,500. So, it will really depend on where you live as to how much you will likely pay for a home.

Whilst Swindon may offer some very reasonably priced properties, it is the counties only City Salisbury which is the most popular location. It was crowned the “best place to live in the UK”, according to the 2019 Sunday Times guide. The average price for a home here is currently £358,416.

Castle Combe is often named ‘the prettiest village in England’. Sitting within the Cotswolds AONB around 5 miles from Chippenham, property in this location is both beautiful as it is expensive with an average home costing £637,367.
