Why Move to Witham?
Historically, there has been a settlement on the site of the town since Neolithic times. Archaeologists have unearthed human remains and several trackways across Witham’s ancient marsh. In later history, the town briefly enjoyed a period as an affluent spa town and was a centre for the wool trade until the decline of the industry in the late 17th century.
Today, Witham is part of the District of Braintree. It is much-in-demand thanks to its mainline railway station and beautiful nearby villages, especially Wickham Bishops, Terling, Kelvedon and Feering.
A significant industrial presence remains in the town, concentrated on three industrial estates to the east close to the A12 junction. There are also commercial offices located in the town centre area.
The relatively small town has plenty going for it. At its centre, is a mix of old and new. Old traditional pubs line the main high street, many of which have been in existence for hundreds of years.
As with so many smaller towns, amenities are adequate for day to day purposes, with some high street food shops such as Tescos, several coffee shops, clothing chains and a few independent outlets.
Positioned just off the A12, with Colchester less than 15 miles away and the M25 approximately 25 miles away in the opposite direction, the town is perfect for the commuter.
Things to do in Witham
The River Brain runs through the town, offering beautiful hiking trails and cycleways. Witham centre has a modest high street with a range of interesting shops but also offers lots of quirky shopping arcades in its little back lanes.
Whetmead Nature Reserve is well worth a visit, a great place to take the children. You can spot plenty of wildlife such as Rabbits, Stoats, Egrets, Dragonflies, Fish, Butterflies and much more. It’s an interesting and varied walk with many beautiful places to stop along the way to enjoy the moment.
There are two golf courses to choose from and there are some lovely pubs and restaurants here too, set in picturesque countryside locations.
The town has a variety of events held throughout the year, such as charity events, concerts, craft fairs and markets.
