    Why Move to Medway?

Within a couple of decades, a huge transformation has taken place in Medway. It has become one of the most promising growth areas in the UK and one of the south-east’s most aspiring and developing destinations.

By marrying its celebrated heritage with a rapidly emerging continental-style cultural scene, Medway is laying the foundations to a firm future for its residents and communities.

Medway is not actually a town but a conurbation (created by several areas which, through growth have merged to form one).

The area is named after the beautiful river which flows through it and comprises collectively, of several very individual locations; Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Rainham, Street and the Hoo Peninsula.

Medway is an ideal location for people looking for a quick commute to work whilst living in an attractive area.

Via motorway, rail, port and airport links, the rest of the UK and Europe are all within easy reach.

Located 30 miles from London, 40 miles from the Eurotunnel and Channel ports, plus the high-speed train from London St. Pancras International Station takes just 35 minutes.

The area is famous for its cultural and military heritage and evidence of this is supported by its Historic Dockyard Chatham, Fort Amherst, and Royal Engineers Museum.

Local residents can look forward to a busy annual calendar of events with over 30 festivals, from exciting street festivals, theatre performances to major international sporting events at Medway Park.

Many neighbourhoods benefit from award winning parks, riverside walks and more than 80 miles of cycle paths and routes.

Additionally, Medway provides access to the beautiful Kent coast on the one side and the Kentish countryside on the other.

One of the region’s best attributes is its education provision which offers excellent secondary schools and four top universities.

There is a lot to look forward to. Over the next 10 years, Medway is set to continue its expansion with a busy development program which includes the creation of around 30,000 new homes and major investment in the towns of Chatham, Rochester, Strood and Hoo.

    Medway Schools & Education

Education standards are particularly good across the area and offer a choice of over 70 primaries and around 12 secondaries.

90% of secondary education provision has been rated as “good” or “outstanding” with just a handful of schools having been reported as “requiring improvement”, by the Governments education watchdog Ofsted.

As well as state secondaries, there are a number of grammar schools dotted across the region.

Several independent schools operate in the area including Meredale Independent Primary School, in Gillingham and Trinity School & College in Rochester.

Medway is also home to the third largest Home School population of children in the UK after the Isles of Scilly and Isle of Wight.

Higher education has brought together the University of Greenwich, the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University and Mid-Kent College at a shared campus at Chatham Maritime.

    Things to Do in Medway

Being spread over a large area means that Medway has a wide variety of leisure attractions and receives hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

A visit to rural parts such as Capstone Farm Country Park, one of Medway’s finest green spaces, is a wonderful opportunity for walking, running, cycling and more. Covering 114 hectares of former farmland on the North Downs it boasts a variety of habitats including ancient woodlands, old orchards, a freshwater lake, meadows, and hedgerows.

There is also no shortage of maritime and military heritage and history in Medway. Highlights include Upnor Castle and Fort Amherst, Britain’s largest Napoleonic Fortress.

The River Medway is lined with boat clubs, marinas, cafes, and restaurants. Wonderful places to walk and eat in beautiful surroundings any time of the year.

During the summer months on board the Jacob Marley, Jetstream Boat Tours offer river cruises, private charters and excursions from Sun Pier, a great way to view the area from a different perspective.

Each town in the Medway region has its own offering of entertainment; Rochester’s castle and cathedral are interesting places to explore.

Chatham is home to a rich maritime and military heritage and Gillingham is home to the Royal Engineers Museum. A fascinating insight into the work of the engineers over the centuries and houses a collection of international importance, telling the explosive history of Britain and its empire.
