Dorchester is the County Town of Dorset and has been the county’s administrative centre for hundreds of years. Despite the town’s relatively small size, it punches well above its weight in terms of employment opportunities.
Agriculture is an important sector. Perenco UK, which operates the oil field and processing facility at Wytch Farm in Purbeck, is a major employer in the area. Jobs can also be found at Dorset County Council and the Dorset County Hospital, one of the largest in the region.
Full of picturesque places to visit Dorset is not short of a photo opportunity or two. Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland, Chesil Beach and Durdle Door, as well as the holiday resorts of Poole, Bournemouth, Weymouth, Swanage, and Lyme Regis all have their particular kind of beauty.

Dorset Schools & Education

Dorset offers some premium schools, both state and private. Responsibility for state schools in Dorset is divided between three local education authorities: Dorset County Council, which covers most of the county, and Bournemouth and Poole unitary authorities.
There are plenty of high-achieving primaries to choose from and across the county, there are 162 state primaries in total.
Swanage St Mark’s Church of England Primary School, Swanage St Mark’s Church of England Primary School and Pimperne Church of England VC Primary School have all reported that their children are performing “better than average” when it comes to reading and writing.
The secondaries of Ferndown Upper School, Atlantic Academy Portland, The Purbeck School and The Blandford School are also achieving fantastic results and performing above average.
When children leave school at aged 16 and move into further education there is a good range of colleges available. Two particularly popular ones are; Kingston Maurward College, a college for land-based studies providing courses in agriculture and horticulture.
Whist Weymouth College has over 4,000 students, studying a wide range of practical and academic courses in many subjects. The college is part of The University of Plymouth Colleges network.
Schools such as the co-educational Canford School which is built around a 19th-century Grade I listed manor house; and Sherborne School, a boys’ school founded in the 16th century offer independently funded education for those who can afford it.
