    Why Move to Dorset?

A ceremonial county which includes the areas of Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole. Covering around 1,024 square miles, Dorset borders four other counties, Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire, and Hampshire.

Dorset offers an altogether peaceful, calm life together with plenty of fresh local produce which results in Dorset residents living longer. On average life expectancy in Dorset is 82.9 years, the highest recorded average life expectancy in the UK.

With over half of the county designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Dorset boasts 5 country parks and miles of coastline. Though London may seem like it is a world away, in several areas such as Weymouth, there is a direct train line through to Waterloo taking just under three hours.

The county may have a sleepy reputation in many ways, but it is far from dull. A host of local festivals means that the whole county is buzzing at certain times of the year. The Purbeck Festival, Sherborne Abbey Festival, Christchurch Food and Wine Festival, and the Swanage Jazz Festival are all extremely popular events.

Living up to its name, Dorset’s Jurassic coast provides plenty of opportunity to discover your own fossils. The only natural World Heritage Site in England, Charmouth and Kimmeridge beaches are the best places to find a fossil or two.

Dorchester is the County Town of Dorset and has been the county’s administrative centre for hundreds of years. Despite the town’s relatively small size, it punches well above its weight in terms of employment opportunities.

Agriculture is an important sector. Perenco UK, which operates the oil field and processing facility at Wytch Farm in Purbeck, is a major employer in the area. Jobs can also be found at Dorset County Council and the Dorset County Hospital, one of the largest in the region.

Full of picturesque places to visit Dorset is not short of a photo opportunity or two. Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland, Chesil Beach and Durdle Door, as well as the holiday resorts of Poole, Bournemouth, Weymouth, Swanage, and Lyme Regis all have their particular kind of beauty.

If unspoilt countryside set close to the seaside along with plenty to do and see is your ideal, perhaps the outstanding county of Dorset is somewhere you should begin a search for your next home.

    Dorset Schools & Education

Schools are always an important consideration for parents. Knowing where the best schools are situated will influence your choice of home location.

Dorset offers some premium schools, both state and private. Responsibility for state schools in Dorset is divided between three local education authorities: Dorset County Council, which covers most of the county, and Bournemouth and Poole unitary authorities.

There are plenty of high-achieving primaries to choose from and across the county, there are 162 state primaries in total.

Swanage St Mark’s Church of England Primary School, Swanage St Mark’s Church of England Primary School and Pimperne Church of England VC Primary School have all reported that their children are performing “better than average” when it comes to reading and writing.

The secondaries of Ferndown Upper School, Atlantic Academy Portland, The Purbeck School and The Blandford School are also achieving fantastic results and performing above average.

When children leave school at aged 16 and move into further education there is a good range of colleges available. Two particularly popular ones are; Kingston Maurward College, a college for land-based studies providing courses in agriculture and horticulture.

Whist Weymouth College has over 4,000 students, studying a wide range of practical and academic courses in many subjects. The college is part of The University of Plymouth Colleges network.

Schools such as the co-educational Canford School which is built around a 19th-century Grade I listed manor house; and Sherborne School, a boys’ school founded in the 16th century offer independently funded education for those who can afford it.

    Things to do in Dorset

One thing is for sure when you move to Dorset, there are a host of ways to spend your time off.

From historic sites like Tyneham and Sherborne Abbey to Dorset Waterpark, the Jurassic Safari, and the Tank Museum, you will quickly find that when it comes to activities, Dorset cannot be beaten.

Sea Life Adventure Park & Aquarium

    Dorset Property

Being one of the most desirable counties to live in the UK, means unfortunately, Dorset has some of the least affordable housing.

Property prices have been rising faster than wages, reducing their affordability with East Dorset being the most expensive area.

If you are considering a move to this part of the country, it is still possible to find a location which offers all the positives that living in Dorset supplies along with a home that does not break the bank.

Start your search in Portland. Here the average cost of a property is £238,293, quite a bit cheaper than Dorset’s average as a whole which stands at £408,304.

Weymouth, Blandford Forum, and Sherborne all have lower than average costing homes for sale.

If your budget allows, the most expensive area is Sandbanks.

Millionaire’s row or “Britain’s Palm Beach”. This stunning location boasts miles of golden sand and clear sheltered waters literally on your doorstep.

Whilst there are lots of desirable and sought-after towns in Dorset among those at the top of the most popular list include:

Wareham, a pretty and historical riverside town which according to Rightmove, has seen a huge annual increase in buyer searches.

Swanage is another popular location which has gained a lot of interest recently. Quiet and safe and right on the coast, it has convenient travel links to nearby countryside and local attractions.

Broadstone has a relatively high average cost of £538,892 for a home, it is a commutable distance from central Poole and Bournemouth. Poole Railway Station is nearby, and Bournemouth Airport is approximately 20 minutes away.
