Why Move to Norfolk?
Living in the county of Norfolk ensures residents have a selection of great locations in which to reside. City, country, or coast whatever your preference, Norfolk has it all and more, the county’s appeal is obvious. Sitting on the mid-Eastern coast of the UK, it is arguably most well-known for the Norfolk Broads.
Boasting around 125 miles of mostly navigable rivers and lakes, ideal for boating and set amid outstanding countryside, the Broads are dotted with charming and picturesque towns and villages. Although Norfolk is largely rural, it does have its own city, Norwich which is also the regions county town. One of the smallest cities in the UK, Norwich is the most complete medieval city in the United Kingdom and in May 2012, it was designated England’s first UNESCO City of Literature.
Great Yarmouth is among one of the most popular seaside locations in the county. Originally a major fishing port that flourished in the 1700s, it has also been a popular family holiday destination for generations as well as an ideal place to relocate to.
Norfolk is one of the few counties in England that does not have a motorway, but this doesn’t mean you can’t travel around the region or even abroad relatively easily.
The main A11 offers several routes to larger towns such as Cambridge (52 miles). Meanwhile, the A47 heads west to Bury St Edmunds (31 miles), with the A1075 leading south to Thetford (19 miles). The Great Eastern Main Line provides various rail services across the region and beyond. Norwich International Airport offers flights within Europe, including a link to Amsterdam with onward flights across the globe.
There are hundreds of tourist attractions in Norfolk, enough to keep you busy all year round. Sandringham House is one of the most popular and Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach is another incredibly prominent visitor attraction. House prices hold up very well in Norfolk.
Having an overall average cost of a home standing at £279,000 across Norfolk, owning your own property is another very alluring appeal when choosing a life in Norfolk.
If you are looking for a home which is in an area full of wonderful towns and villages offering a more relaxed lifestyle along with connections which can propel you right into the heart of some amazing historical, cultural, and scenic locations, perhaps you should consider Norfolk.
Norfolk Schools & Education
Education standards in Norfolk vary from place to place however, the consensus is that Norfolk provides a good all-round education across all age groups. Whilst the county has many state nursery and primary schools, being largely rural means that some of the smaller villages do not have secondary schools so older children often have to travel out of their local areas.
The same applies to private education. Whilst there are some fantastic options, most independent schools are located close to larger towns.
Gresham’s School in Holt in the north of the county, Thetford Grammar School in Thetford which is Britain’s fifth oldest extant school, Langley School in Loddon, and several in the city of Norwich, including Norwich School and Norwich High School for Girls are some of the more notable independents available.
The City College Norwich and the College of West Anglia are colleges covering Norwich and King’s Lynn as well as Norfolk as a whole. Easton & Otley College, 7 miles west of Norwich, provides agriculture-based courses for the county, parts of Suffolk and nationally.
The University of East Anglia sits on the outskirts of Norwich and Norwich University of the Arts is based in seven buildings in and around the city centre.
The University of Suffolk also runs higher education courses in Norfolk, from multiple locations including Great Yarmouth College.
Things to do in Norfolk
An incredible number of attractions combine to make Norfolk what it is today, one of the UK’s most sought-after holiday destinations.
If it is good enough for the Queen, who regularly visits Sandringham House for her holidays, surely it is good enough for the rest of us!
Some of the highlights of the area include:
As well as these popular attractions, there are many more places to visit and things to do in the county, enough to keep the whole family entertained for a long time.
The Norfolk region offers buyers a wide-ranging property portfolio consisting of over 2500 homes.
There is a swathe of fantastic locations to choose from as well. If its urban living you are interested in, head to the regions only city Norwich.
Sitting in an area called the “Golden Triangle” Norwich has homes which span several eras, particularly popular are the city’s Victorian terraces, conveniently sitting centrally, close to fantastic amenities and travel connections. A home here costs an average of £288,606.
For a house with a sea view, it’s hard to beat Cromer. Sitting right on the coast it is a perfect family location. Offering a range of small flint houses, townhouses and ex fishermen’s cottages, the average cost of a home here is £297,560.
Thetford is ideal for those who want to live close to rural areas but with the benefit of being an easy drive to the coast. A busy town centre provides all you need whilst the little villages dotted on its outskirts offer close knit communities many nowadays seek. One of the cheaper options, homes in Thetford will cost on average £251,384.
Through Government funding to the tune of around £3.5bn the last 10 years has seen more and more hew homes being constructed across the county.
There are currently 21 new build sites offering a massive collection of 1,2-,3- & 4-bedroom homes for sale.
