Why Move to The West Midlands?

The second most populous county in England after Greater London is the West Midlands. A metropolitan county and combined authority area in western-central England.

With a 2020 estimated population of 2,939,927, the area embraces seven metropolitan boroughs: the two cities of Birmingham and Coventry, and the boroughs of Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, and Walsall. Being centrally located, the West Midlands is often considered as the “heart of England”. This region is excellent for anyone who loves quiet places and hates busy cities, Birmingham, and Coventry aside of course!

Each of the county’s boroughs is ideal for all and similarly offers a host of countryside locations however, Solihull is slightly different in that it is more of an upmarket largely urban location. The thriving economy is driven by a great number of large industries located across the region, supplying hundreds of employment opportunities. Many choose to have their HQ’s here due to it being so central.

The population of the area is very diverse. A total of 784,000 people born in other countries made up an estimated 13.6% of the West Midlands’s population, a melting pot of cultures and cuisines. Having such excellent connectivity speaks for itself. Getting around the region by road or rail is so simple you can pretty much reside anywhere and commute to Birmingham in no time at all.

A huge bonus is that the West Midlands has one of the lowest costs of living in the UK.
Residents may get paid slightly less, however overall, in the happiness stakes, the region comes up trumps in a big way. House prices are also considered very affordable with thousands of homes for sale at an average cost of £267,386 and many much less.
Split between the cities of Birmingham and Coventry the West Midlands is home to some of the best schools in the country and no less than 10 top universities.

The West Midlands is excellent for studying, for spending an amazing time outdoors, for enjoying some wonderful landscapes, exploring, walking, trying different exciting activities, and some of the country’s iconic castles and historic monuments can also be found here. This part of the UK manages to provide a wonderful concoction of positive attributes which are hard to resist and even harder to beat.

    Working in West Midlands

The whole of the Midlands region has long been a hub for industry and was very prominent in the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries
Being such an accessible area has led to it being a centre for logistics companies who rely on West Midland’s incredibly convenient road and rail system to transport their goods.
Currently, the total GVA output (economic productivity) for the region stands at £99 billion. The number of available jobs has recently increased to 1.9m and the employment rate is 71.7%.

Following a report recently published by the West Midlands Combined Authority, The West Midlands is experiencing an economic renaissance bucking the trend of other areas outside London. The report also notes that “many economic fundamentals are expected to stay strong with growth in real estate and business, professional and financial services. HS2 will continue to improve productivity, connectivity, skills, and job opportunities”. Welcome news indeed for the region.

How quickly you find work will depend on your particular skills. According to Indeed, the online job agency, there are well over 51,000 vacancies across hundreds of sectors in the West Midlands. (uk.indeed.com/jobs)
Whether you can work as an admin assistant, a teacher or have the qualifications to manage a busy university from the top, there are so many universities in the area, opportunities to work in an educational environment are plentiful.

131 million visitors visit the area annually. Brimming with areas of natural beauty and historical sites the tourism industry is critical to the West Midlands. This vibrant industry generates huge economic growth and new jobs for the region. From major cultural events to conferences aimed at international visitors. The possibilities of finding work in this incredible area are endless.

    West Midlands Schools & Education

There are so many reasons why people move home. New job, relationship changes, downsizing or one of the most popular is upgrading to a larger home to accommodate an expanding family. For the latter reason, as a parent, doing all you can to secure a place for your children in a good school is crucial with the most popular ones having long waiting lists. You will be relieved to know that there are a huge number of great schools for all age groups.

Each of the local authorities has at least one further education college for students aged over 16, and all operate traditional 5–7 infant, 7–11 junior, and 11-16/18 secondary schools for students in compulsory education.

You can check school performance levels by visiting the Governments web site and entering the school’s name. (www.compare).
Data such as Ofsted ratings and performance statistics are all clearly shown. This tool is incredibly helpful when you are making your decisions as to where in the region you are going to live.

For those students leaving compulsory education and moving on with their studies at college and later university, there are plenty of choices. Birmingham Metropolitan College is one of the largest further and higher education institutions in the country with 10 campuses in the city. The main college site is Matthew Boulton College based at Jennens Road in Birmingham City Centre.

Seven of the 10 universities in the county are located in Birmingham. Coventry University and the University of Warwick are located in Coventry, and the University of Wolverhampton is located in Wolverhampton.

Things to do in West Midlands

As millions of visitors to the area can attest, you could not choose a better location when it comes to the entertainment factor.

The West Midlands region itself has much to offer whilst its central position provides great access routes to nearby counties, some are home to the Cotswolds, and the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty within.

Take a trip to Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Located in the heart of the city, it makes up around 40% of the UK’s jewellery production. Famous brands such as Cartier, Tiffany’s, and Tag Heuer have their pieces made here.

Enjoy a bargain? Head to Bicester Discount Shopping Village. An all-around open-air shopping experience with unmissable savings in your favourite boutiques. Fendi, Givenchy, Boss, Dior, they are all here plus many more.

Experience Royal Leamington Spa’s Parks and gardens. This historic town has so much to see and do. From hiring a boat on the River Leam to following a heritage trail that encompasses the quirky tale of the Elephant Walk and the elegant Lansdowne Crescent.

If you enjoy a round of golf or two, The King’s Norton Golf Club, regarded as one of the leading courses in the West Midlands, is a true gem of the golfing world.

Shrines in Coventry include super-sized sports and music arenas. With endless ancient woodlands, heaths, and wetlands to explore, it isn’t hard to see how this place inspired JRR Tolkien to write The Lord of the Rings.

    West Midlands Property

If you are considering a move to this part of the country, you are in for a treat when it comes to cost as most properties do not break the bank.

Although the average value across the region is £267,386, this does not reflect the reality in many places. Take Birmingham as an example, it has an average price currently of £235,681. In Coventry, you will pay an average of £247,108 and Dudley just £181,539.
With seven boroughs to choose from, the variety is enormous.

Small towns such as Tenbury Wells which sits alongside the River Theme, Church Stretton, nicknamed Little Switzerland in the late Victorian and Edwardian period for its landscape, and Broseley which borders the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, have become popular locations.

You may prefer to live life at a faster pace, in which case Birmingham or Coventry could be for you.

Birmingham is a compact city with everything within a walking distance of around 30 minutes. Apartments old and new are dotted across the city and the average cost of a one-bedroom flat starts from £120,000.

Coventry has plenty to offer new residents too. As well as having some amazing attractions, it is considered part of the ‘Midlands-Engine’, the home of the UK motor industry and a proud multicultural city. Homes are cheaper here, and you can purchase one for just £70,000.
