Yorkshire (God’s own country) is one of the most iconic counties we have in the UK, and is also the largest. The wild North York moorlands, it’s Roman and Viking heritage, it is its Industrial Revolution-era towns and cities, and most importantly the friendliness of its people which combined make Yorkshire a very special place indeed.
Everything is within easy access making Yorkshire not just popular with UK citizens, but one of the most visited locations in Europe. Home to five cities and plenty of large towns plus a host of wonderful small towns and villages, finding your forever home offers a myriad of choices. Leeds is the largest city, followed by Sheffield, Bradford, Kingston-Upon-Hull, and historical York.
If you are working, where you move to will require access to good travel links. The main A1 motorway passes right through the centre of the county. Another important road is the more easterly A19 road which starts in Doncaster and ends just north of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Relocating close to any of these main arterial roads will provide quick routes to some of the main employment areas of Yorkshire.
Popular places to live include Leeds, Beverley, Roundhay, Ripon, Saltaire, Ranmoor, and York. All offer prospective buyers something different. If a seaside lifestyle is what you are searching for, complete with sandy beaches head to Scarborough. Britain’s oldest seaside resort dates back to the spa town-era in the 17th century, while Whitby has been voted as the United Kingdom’s best beach, with a “postcard-perfect harbor”.
Those who prefer a more rural way of life are spoilt for choice. Yorkshire boasts more than 3,200 square kilometers of stunning natural beauty spread across three National Parks. Try Skipton, Easingwood, or Colne, all sit well within a short distance from AONB. These days it has become ridiculously expensive to live in or close to any of our cities. However, when it comes to value for money, Yorkshire is hard to beat as homes across the county cost a fraction of the cost of other areas of the UK.

Working in Yorkshire
Although the past 18 months have seen an overall decrease in job availability in the UK, mainly due to the covid situation, there has been a recent shift.
According to UK Government statistics, all regions are now above pre-coronavirus levels, with Scotland having the largest percentage increase on the month. This is positive news if you are looking for employment in Yorkshire.
Yorkshire has a mixed economy, accounting for about 8-10% of UK GDP. The City of Leeds is Yorkshire’s largest city and the leading centre of trade and commerce and is also one of the UK’s larger financial centres.
Tourism has become increasingly significant and a growing sector right across the county generating more than £9 billion per annum and supporting almost 225,000 jobs.
Many large British companies are based in Yorkshire or were founded there such as PD Ports. They own and operate Teesport, between Middlesbrough and Redcar.
Bus and coach buildings Plaxton, McCains frozen foods, Ebuyer the largest independent online retailer of computer and electrical goods, and Skipton Building Society are all based in the county.

Yorkshire Schools & Education
The standard of education across the county is excellent. Yorkshire has a large base of primary and secondary schools operated by both local authorities and private bodies, and a dozen universities, along with a wide range of colleges and further education facilities.
A good number of schools both primary and secondary have been rated well by Ofsted, receiving their highest award of “outstanding”.
The Sunday Times published a report entitled The Sunday Times School Guide for Yorkshire.
Ranked by how well their students performed in their exams, the newspaper revealed that the top three schools were Ripon Grammar School, Skipton Girls High School, and Ermysted’s Grammar School, Skipton.

Things to do in Yorkshire
When it comes to entertainment, there is an endless list of attractions to choose from across this amazing county.
As large swathes of Yorkshire are given over to “areas of outstanding beauty”, finding a place to walk, hike, cycle, camp, or picnic close to where you live is simple.
Some of the most popular locations are the county’s three national parks; Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors, the Peak District which includes the Pennines.
